Since the early 1990’s, C & J has been a reputable builder of fully custom homes in the Lake Oconee and surrounding areas including Athens. Many C & J built custom homes are located in the lake area’s premier communities. Additionally, C & J excels in additions and remodeling with results that transform older dwellings into updated custom homes. C & J prides itself as being a builder who demands the highest standards through honesty, hard work, attention to detail, and a strong faith in adhering to Christian principles. C & J has grown over the years and they give great attention to their practice of using only quality materials and high quality subcontractors who also take pride in their work.
C & J welcomes the opportunity to work side by side with homeowners as they design and build each home. Additions and remodels are given like attention.
As a family owned and operated business, Jim George (owner and founder of C & J) started building homes with his father and brother in the 1960’s. Coming from this background of homebuilding, Jim has become very successful in building on and around the lake area. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia where he received a degree in Business Administration majoring in Real Estate and Insurance. He began building around the Lake Oconee area in 1994 and has been an active member of the Lake Oconee Area Builders Association (LOABA) since then, where he has served on its Board of Directors since 1995 and twice as President. He has actively participated at the state level for many years and continues as a State Director of the Home Builders Association of Georgia.
Public concerns which were brought to Jim by homeowners during his years as LOABA President, along with his personal commitment to excellence, resulted in Jim becoming a strong supporter of the Certified Professional Home Builder (CPHB) program nearly from its 1998 beginning. This program was conceived as a vehicle where concerned, dedicated builders could voluntarily raised the bar on industry standards to earn this designation which would give the public a way to find a builder they knew had already met important standards. An annual recertification requirement was included to assure builders continued to meet these standards. In 1998, nearly 10 years before Builder Licensing was required in Georgia, C & J Custom Homes became one of less than 300 builders who voluntarily met these stringent requirements.
In 1999 Jim was asked and agreed to serve on the Board of The Housing Institute which sponsors and administers this program, and he has continuously served as a BOD member. He is actively involved in the growth, development, and outreach of his church, Grace Fellowship. Jim is the proud father of 3 daughters and 6 beautiful grandchildren.
 Brent Porter, a native Georgian, recently joined C & J Custom Homes as their new Vice President. Brent has been in the real estate and homebuilding industry for 9 years in South East Florida, working 8 years with Florida’s largest production builder, and other years with a private custom home builder such as C & J. A graduate of Valdosta State University, Brent studied business management and criminal justice. Brent started in real estate in the Orlando area in the mid 1990’s and quickly moved into the homebuilding industry. Having spent many years selling new construction to happy families, he also was actively involved in the sales management and marketing of new home sales. Brent has studied to receive his Florida Real Estate License and Florida Real Estate Broker License. While in Florida, Brent attended numerous real estate conventions and seminars learning skills related to selling, marketing, building, financing, and appraising real estate. He has been a long time member of the Florida Association of Realtors and the Palm Beach Builders Association. In Georgia, Brent is an active member of the Lake Oconee Area Builders association and is on several comities to help the associations prosper. Brent is studying and working with Jim to become eligible for his own licensing in Georgia.
Brent is an avid outdoors man. His hobbies include golfing, hunting, endurance racing and fishing. Along with his wife, Kim, their two daughters, Julia (6), and Christina (4), the Porter family stays very active in their community, church, and their children’s school.
